Words from the Warlord

July A.S. XVII

Greetings gentle Lords and Ladies, allow me to introduce myself to those of you who don't know me. I am Lord Thomas Buttesthorn, your new Warlord.

It is my feeling that in addition to promoting enthusiasm and encouragement to those who follow the gentle arts of war, it is also incumbent upon me to encourage and support war training and practice. What I would like at this point is to hear from fighters interested in war training, and in the forming of war units. A circle of friends might form the basis of one, or a household.

In addition to fighter training, I would like to see combat archer and javelin training for those interested. Eventually I would like to see better coordination between them and fighter, groups for mutual experience.

The only way to be effective in war is to be organized and work as a team. Furthermore, war involves combat between (usually) large groups of people. I feel that the best war training should involve large groups of fighters, with smaller teams acting as sub-units. Many war scenarios can be practiced and experimented with when one has sufficient fighters to implement them. Toward this end, I would like to extend a friendly invitation to groups and individual fighters from outside the province to help plan and participate in joint training. If anyone has ideas, experience, or other skills which they would like to share, I would be glad to hear from them. It is my hope that we all can benefit.

Lastly, if anyone has a question involving some aspect of SCA warfare, regulations, or other related items, I can be reached Tues. or Thurs. between 8 p.m. and 9p.m., or by letter. I will endeavor to answer the question if I can or pass you along to the person with the answer. From time to time, I may print those those things which I feel might have universal benefit. Well I suppose I should save something for later so let me close by saying that whoever said "War is hell" obviously wasn't doing it right.

Warlord Thomas Buttesthorn
