An Anglo Saxon Riddle

from Euriol of Lothian

Christ the true Lord of Triumphs
fixed me in battle; often I burn the living,
affict countless kins with misery
when close to earth, though I spare them
when my lord commands me to fight.
At times I gladden the hearts of many,
at times I comfort from afar
those I war upon; they feel this
as they do the other, when once more
over ocean’s deep I amend their life.

What am I?
