An Anglo Saxon Riddle

from Euriol of Lothian

Ancient my ancestry
lived in towns since I was first
swaddled in fire, scoured by flame.
Now earth's enemy
and brother pens me, who was the prime
cause of my grief, who wrecked
all my roots in earth, my ancestry;
the memory returns; I can not harm him,
but all over earth, again and again
I fasten bonds. Not few my marvels,
not small my might in this world,
but I must hide my traces
from all men, my secret strength
and supreme power. Say what I am called.

What am I?
